St James' 200 Fun Day
This year marks 200 years since the nave at St James' church (the octagonal section) was rebuilt in 1821. The anniversary of the rededication in on Saturday 11 September.
To celebrate the occasion, we are arranging a fun day in and around the church from 11am until 4pm. Everyone is welcome, both those who attend regularly (or not so regularly), and those who only know the building from the outside. We know that a great number of people in Teignmouth and beyond have family connections to St James' and retain a fondness for the church even though they rarely visit, so we hope that they will join the party too.
We hope to see:
- Sea Shanties with the Back Beach Boyz
- A mummers play by the Teignmouth Players
- A flea circus
- An exhibition of family photographs and memories of St James'
- Flower displays
- Live music in church
- and more...
Sam Lock (Teign Heritage & TAAG) is organising some children's workshops before the event to create a banner displaying the timeline of what has happened locally and nationally since the original building was dedicated in 1268 which we also hope to display.
Although this is not a fund-raising event it does coincide with the annual Ride & Stride event to support Devon Historic Churches Trust. Proceeds from the sale of refreshments will be shared between Devon Historic Churches Trust and St James' Restoration Fund (for the maintenance of the church building).
